10th District Press Critiques Wolf's Big Government Approach

Ashburn, VA—During the past few weeks, newspapers in the 10th Congressional District have been critical of Congressman Wolf’s approach on a range of issues. Wolf has held his seat in the 10th District for nearly 27 years. On three occasions, editorial pages have highlighted their disagreement with his big government approach:
- The Winchester Star urged President Bush to veto a weak ethics and lobbying reform bill. This bill was meant to reduce the practice of pork-barrel spending. As part of its case against the bill, the paper dressed down Congressman Wolf for his proclivity to back such pork-barrel spending. As evidence the paper cited the statistic that the Congressman voted against such projects a paltry four percent of the time, as found in a recent survey by the Club for Growth.
- Leesburg Today criticized Congressman Wolf’s suggestion that a private toll road in Virginia should be seized by the state government. The editorial implied that this action would be something Hugo Chavez would favor, describing it as something that “smacks of a tactic used only south of the American border or in countries run by politburos.”
- Once again the Winchester Star took Congressman Wolf to task as a “tax and spend Republican” for his vote in support of an enormous expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). It further derided the program as a step toward nationalized health care. Congressman Wolf’s vote defied President Bush’s veto threat, which he followed through on shortly after passage of the bill.
“These prominent newspapers in the 10th District have picked up on Congressman’s Wolf’s position as a ‘Big Government Republican’ who can be readily relied upon by the Democrats to vote with them on their agenda, especially on economic issues,’ noted Vern McKinley, Congressman Wolf’s GOP challenger for 2008.
